Use the RDA Master Encroachment Permit and get a sticker.
Don't get hit with a fine from the City of Oakland.

The time has come to renew or request your A-Frame permit stickers so that you are in compliance with the City of Oakland Encroachment requirements.

Historically, there was a complaint from a local resident about our merchant A-Frame signs and other items blocking the sidewalk. The City was forced to enforce the Encroachment permit fine and A-Frames were removed from the Avenue. The RDA worked with the city and was able to obtain an encroachment permit for the Rockridge Business Improvement District.

If the RDA sticker is not placed on your A-frame sign, you could be fined up to $1000, if the City were to enforce the encroachment permit requirement. You as the business owner would not receive this citation; it would go to the property owner. There is no cost associated with obtaining the sticker.

Below in you will find the conditions that are set forth for allowing your sign to be placed in the public right-of-way.

1) Do not block the sidewalk.

2) Try to align the A-frame so that your customer or potential customer does not ding their car door on the sign, as this makes for a very unpleasant visit to the Avenue.

3) A-Frames are to be placed near the curb aligned with the tree wells. One of the best places I found as a marker is the old meter poles that have been cut off the Avenue. Please do not obstruct sidewalk or bicycle racks

The RDA will need the following conditions met:

1. A Certificate of Insurance naming the “Rockridge District Association, a RBID” and its volunteers and employees as additional insured. Minimum amount of GL coverage is $1,000,000.

2. A printout from the City of Oakland website https://LTSS.oaklandnet.comindicating that your BID Account is paid up for the current year.

Once these steps have been completed, you will be given a Rockridge District Association sticker good for two years.* Place the sticker in the lower right-hand corner of the backside of your A-frame sign, as to not interfere with your art on the front of the A-frame sign. If your business has the space to put out multiple A-Frames that comply with the City conditions, that will be acceptable.

*New stickers should have the dates Aug 2021 to Aug 2023
